Following the success of the ‘Kick Against Malaria Tournament’ on May 1, Grassroot Soccer YEDI, with the support of Mobil Producing Nigeria (a subsidiary of ExxonMobil), organized the ‘Creative Kids Fight Malaria’ Art Contest. After a rigorous process of judging and review, winners emerged and were unveiled at an award ceremony on June 6, 2014 at the Yusuf Grillo Hall, Department of Arts & Design, Yaba College of Technology.

In a hall packed with creative kids, proud parents and highly impressed guests; the winners of the second edition of the Creative Kids Fight Malaria Art Contest were announced and awarded with prizes.

Nearly nine hundred entries were received in both the Drawing (Draw the Lines Against Malaria) and the Essay (Write Off Malaria) categories. This year’s entries were particularly remarkable, with a lot of the kids showing impressive understanding of the topics. This reflects great promise and progress in the fight against malaria in Nigeria.

According to Mrs Rita Umoren, Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mobil Producing Nigeria, “We are pleased with the outcome of the Creative Kids Fight Malaria Art Contest, and we are proud to have sponsored this initiative. ExxonMobil remains committed to the fight against malaria in Nigeria. Its devastating effect requires even more participation in combating the disease. We continue to support programs like Grassroot Soccer YEDI and others to build a malaria free nation.”

“I feel so happy and proud today that my daughter came first in the Essay Contest. She worked hard at it and I am glad that she won eventually. I am also very pleased with the initiative and I strongly urge everyone out there to learn from these kids and what they’ve expressed in their drawings and essays”, said Mrs Onawu, a very proud parent of the winner of the Essay category.

In the words of Onawu Precious, first place winner in the essay category, “I strongly believe that malaria can not only be prevented but it can be eradicated. I stand up for a world free of malaria today!”
