Menstrual health is a fundamental aspect of well-being, yet millions of adolescents face barriers to managing their periods with dignity. To celebrate this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day, YEDI and Be Girl are spotlighting remarkable progress in Nigeria, demonstrating how education and access can drive meaningful change.

Championing Menstrual Equity: The YEDI & Be Girl Pilot

In partnership with Be Girl, we launched a pilot initiative designed to empower adolescents with two essential components of menstrual equity:

Education

Interactive sessions equipped girls and boys with knowledge to challenge stigma and foster empathy, building a culture where menstrual health is understood, respected, and openly discussed.

Access

Providing high-quality reusable menstrual products ensures that menstruation is managed comfortably, sustainably, and with dignity—removing barriers that can limit school attendance and daily activities.

Key Takeaways: The Power of Awareness & Access

  • 91% of girls reported feeling more confident in managing their periods
  • Boys and girls developed a greater understanding of menstrual health and its link to Sexual & Reproductive Health
  • 80%+ of participants said they would recommend reusable menstrual products to friends.

Beyond Periods: Building a #PeriodFriendlyWorld

Menstrual equity isn’t just about access to products, it’s about ensuring confidence, empathy, and inclusion at every level. When young people are educated and empowered, they help foster a world where menstruation is embraced, not stigmatized.

Thanks to the our mentors, partners, and the incredible adolescents who made this pilot a success.
